overview paintings De ijsvogel Details

The Dutch title “De ijsvogel” means “the icecreambird” as well as the kingfisher (the small blue bird living along small streams). Hans, a physically and mentally handicapped man, refuses to join his parents on a walk if the walk doesn’t lead to a place where icecream is served. The kingfisher is sitting on his shoulder, with his icecreamshit dripping from Hans’ sweater. The animal and flowers are referring to a simplistic sound association in Dutch: “stokrozen” (hollyhocks) and “stokstaartje” (meerkat).
